Shibuya: DIY okonomiyaki

Friday afternoon is when the streets and shops start to crowd for the weekend. Will indulged me in my favourite cheap Tokyo restaurant, on Shibuya's Centre Gai – a make your own restaurant popular with local drunks and gaijin alike, with different types of dishes you make on a hot plate in front of you. That is, unless you're Japanese and a bit too wasted from Friday night drinks. In that case you get the highly efficient female waiter to put it all together for you, cheering away as your meal gets cooked for you.

The Tokyo okonomiyaki is a bit more similar to the bain marie warmed ones you get in Melbourne – there's a lot of batter giving it a more cake-like texture.

Washed down with a beer or oolong and shochu you're ready to start the night. You're even more ready if you follow it all up with a healthy double shot of cheap scotch.

Straight after it was down the street with the staggering masses to indulge of a couple of hours of nomihodai karaoke. It's probably better that there's no photos of that part...
