Naoshima is a little island between Honshu and Shikoku on the Inland Sea.
From Osaka it's like this: Subway > Shinkansen > Marine Liner > Local Train > Ferry > Bus. It's kind of epic but completely worth it. Staying at Benesse House makes it even more so. Designed by Tadao Ando, the whole complex is pretty amazing – a work of art in itself.
There's three main art sites on Naoshima – built pretty much to house Benesse Corporation's art collection - The Benesse House Museum & The Chichu Art Musuem (both incredible Ando-designed buildings) and the Nokyo-mae art house installations.
You know how there's one photo that everyone gets of a certain tourist spot? This is Naoshima's. It's a big sculpture on just on the water's edge.
We hate spiders with a passion. Unfortunately, on Naoshima you gotta watch out cos these colourful motherfuckers are everywhere
Where we stayed – the Park section of Benesse House.
The view from our balcony.
Getting our champagne on in the lounge.
There's a whole bunch of outdoor sculpture exhibits dotted around the island.
The Nokyo-Mae area of the island houses the Art house Project – they took over 8 houses in the town and turned them into art installations. No photos allowed! (but I think there's some on the Schwipe blog from ages ago).
Streets of Nokyo-mae.
Lunch in Nokyo-mae in this awesome little vegetarian place.
Getting all nautical on the ferry from Naoshima to Takamatsu.
